Dermatographism

What is Dermatographism?

Dermatographism is a condition in which your skin becomes extremely sensitive to minor injuries or pressure, such as having your skin lightly scratched or rubbed. As a result, you develop a raised, itchy wheal along the area that was scratched or rubbed. The wheal usually dissipates within 10-15 minutes.

Symptoms of Dermatographism

The most common symptoms of dermatographism include:

  • Raised, itchy wheals along lines where your skin was scratched or rubbed.
  • Swelling of the skin surrounding the wheals.
  • A tingling, burning sensation in the area.
  • Redness in the area.

Cause of Dermatographism

The exact cause of dermatographism is unknown. However, it’s believed to be caused by an overly sensitive immune system that reacts strongly to minor trauma, such as that caused by scratching or rubbing your skin. It’s also believed to be hereditary.

Treatment of Dermatographism

The goal of treatment for Dermatographism is to reduce itching and discomfort. Treatments may include:

  • Allergy medications, such as antihistamines and topical steroid creams.
  • Avoiding activities that may trigger a reaction, such as getting your skin scratched or rubbed.
  • Using mild soaps and cleansers.
  • Using calm, cool compresses to reduce itching and irritation.
