Anti-DNase B blood test

What is an Anti-DNase B Blood Test?

An anti-DNase B blood test measures the levels of anti-streptolysin O (ASO) antibodies in a person's blood. The ASO test is used to help diagnose and monitor streptococcal infections, and is most commonly used to detect a recent strep throat infection.

Preparation for the test

No special preparation is necessary for a ASO test. Patients may be asked to fast for eight hours prior to the test, but this is usually not necessary. Patients should let their healthcare providers know about any medications they are taking, as some medications may affect the results.

Procedure of the test

A blood sample is taken from the patient’s arm by a healthcare provider or qualified technician. The sample is then sent to a laboratory, where it is tested for the presence of ASO antibodies. Results are typically available within one to two days.

Types of Anti-DNase B Blood Tests

There are two types of ASO tests: qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative test simply looks for the presence of ASO antibodies, and does not measure the amount of antibodies present. It is often used to detect a recent strep throat infection. The quantitative test measures the amount of ASO antibodies present in the blood. It can be used to detect a recent strep throat infection and to monitor the body’s response to treatment.

Risks associated with the test

  • The risks associated with the ASO test are minimal. The most common risk is the pain associated with having a blood sample taken, but this is usually minor.
  • In rare cases, some patients may experience dizziness or fainting due to the procedure. If this happens, the patient should lie down for a few minutes before standing.

Why is the Anti-DNase B Blood Test Used?

The ASO test is used to help diagnose and monitor streptococcal infections, such as acute strep throat. It can also be used to monitor the body’s response to strep throat treatment. The test can also be used to determine a person’s risk of developing a streptococcal infection in the future. It is also used to detect an active strep infection in people who are immunocompromised.

When is the Test Performed?

The ASO test is usually ordered when a person has symptoms of a streptococcal infection, such as sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue. It is also ordered after a person has been treated for a strep infection, to make sure that the infection has been successfully treated.
