What is Hypogonadotrophic Hypogonadism?

Hypogonadotrophic Hypogonadism is a type of hypogonadism which involves low or abnormal production of hormones in men due to issues in the hypothalamus or pituitary gland. It is an endocrine disorder that results in the dysfunction of the gonads or testes in males and can lead to infertility and other medical complications.

Symptoms of Hypogonadotrophic Hypogonadism

Some of the symptoms of Hypogonadotrophic Hypogonadism in males include:

  • Delayed onset or absence of puberty
  • Impaired growth
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Reduced muscle mass and strength
  • Reduced body and facial hair
  • Low semen volume or absence of ejaculation

Causes of Hypogonadotrophic Hypogonadism

Hypogonadotrophic Hypogonadism can result from several causes and conditions. These include:

  • Tumor of the hypothalamus or pituitary gland
  • Injuries, infections or surgery that result in hypothalamus or pituitary gland damage
  • Chromosome defects or genetic syndromes
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Undefined cause

Treatment for Hypogonadotrophic Hypogonadism

Since the causes of Hypogonadotrophic Hypogonadism vary, the treatments also differ for each patient. Treatment may include hormone replacement therapy such as testosterone therapy, gonadotropin therapy or oestrogen therapy if the underlying cause arises from genetic defects. You may also be prescribed medication to help control the symptoms caused by Hypogonadotrophic Hypogonadism, such as medications to treat erectile dysfunction, for instance. If the disorder is caused due to a tumor, surgery may be required to remove it, along with radiation therapy or chemotherapy.
