Infection caused by staphylococci

Staphylococci Infections

Staphylococci are a group of Gram-positive bacteria that are the cause of a wide array of infections in humans. While some species are part of the normal flora of the skin, others are opportunistic pathogens that can cause severe infections if given the opportunity. Staphylococci infections can range from minor skin infections such as pimples and boils to potentially deadly conditions such as endocarditis, meningitis, toxic shock syndrome, and septic arthritis.

Symptoms

The symptoms associated with staphylococcal infections vary greatly depending on the type of infection and location. Examples of common symptoms include:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Coughing
  • Difficulty breathing

Treatment

Treatment for staphylococcal infections depends on the type and severity of the infection, but usually includes administration of antibiotics. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary. Other methods of treatment may include drainage of abscesses or surgical removal of infected areas.

Prevention

Preventing staphylococcal infections is possible with a few simple steps. These include:

  • Practicing good hygiene, including washing hands often
  • Not sharing personal items such as razors and towels
  • Avoiding contact with people who are ill
  • Wearing protective clothing and equipment when necessary
  • Cleaning any cuts or scrapes promptly and properly
