Androgen Deficiency

What is Androgen Deficiency?

Androgen deficiency is an endocrine condition in which there is a reduction in the production of androgens—male hormones—in the body. This can occur at any age, but is most common in men over age 60. It can lead to a range of symptoms, such as reduced sex drive, depression, and fatigue.

Causes of Androgen Deficiency

The most common cause of androgen deficiency is age. As men age, testosterone production in the testes tends to gradually decrease. Other causes include genetic disorders, testicular trauma, or illnesses that affect the production of hormones. In some cases, androgen deficiency may be caused by certain medications or treatments.

Symptoms of Androgen Deficiency

Androgen deficiency can cause a range of symptoms, including:

  • Reduced sex drive
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Hot flashes
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Reduced muscle mass
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Reduced body and facial hair

Diagnosis and Treatment of Androgen Deficiency

If you experience symptoms associated with androgen deficiency, it is important to discuss them with your healthcare provider. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and lab tests to measure your testosterone level. Treatment may include testosterone replacement therapy, lifestyle changes, and stress management.
