Pruritus Vulvae

What is Pruritus Vulvae?

Pruritus vulvae (PV) is defined as an itching, burning, stinging, and/or tingling sensation experienced by women in their vulval region. It is a very common problem among women of all ages and can be caused by a variety of factors, from bacterial or viral infections, dietary deficiencies, stress, allergies, or hormonal imbalances.

Causes of Pruritus Vulvae

The cause of PV can vary from person to person, but may include:

  • Vaginal infections – such as yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis
  • Skin or allergic reactions – such as contact dermatitis
  • Hormonal imbalances – such as menopause or pregnancy
  • Dietary deficiencies – such as low vitamin B or zinc levels
  • Medications – such Topical corticosteroids, antifungal medications, antibiotics, etc.
  • Psychological issues – such as stress or anxiety

Symptoms of Pruritus Vulvae

The main symptom of PV is severe itching, which can range from mild to intense. Other symptoms may include burning, stinging, or tingling sensations in the vulval area, as well as redness, swelling, and a rash. In some cases, the area may also become sore and dry.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Pruritus Vulvae

PV can typically be diagnosed and treated by a healthcare provider. Diagnosis may include a physical exam and review of the patient’s medical history, as well as laboratory tests or a skin biopsy. Treatment often includes topical or oral medications and lifestyle changes such as avoiding certain allergens or eating a balanced diet. In some cases, vaginal moisturizers or topical creams may also help. It is important to follow the treatment recommendations provided by your healthcare provider.
