A lumbosacral spine x-ray is a diagnostic imaging test used to view and assess the structure and condition of the lower back. An X-ray emits electromagnetic radiation through the body to create an image of the lumbosacral spine. The image produced is then used to diagnose diseases, injuries, and other conditions of the spine.
Preparation for Lumbosacral Spine X-Ray
Prior to the X-ray, your doctor will ask you to remove items of clothing that may block the image, like jewelry. You may be given a dressing gown to wear during the X-ray. You will also be asked to lie down on an X-ray table. The precise position of the body is determined by the doctor for the best view of the spine.
Procedure for Lumbosacral Spine X-Ray
The X-ray is taken using a handheld device which is slowly and gently pressed against the lumbar area. Your doctor will make sure the spinal area is clearly visible and that the X-ray device is positioned correctly. The X-ray images are then taken and sent to a computer for processing.
Types of Lumbosacral Spine X-Ray
There are four types of lumbosacral spine X-ray:
- Anteroposterior View – an X-ray of the front side of the lumbosacral spine.
- Lateral View – an X-ray of the side of the lumbosacral spine.
- Anteroposterior and Lateral Views – X-rays of both the front and side of the lumbosacral spine.
- Tomography – a series of X-ray images of the lumbosacral spine taken from different angles.
Risks of Lumbosacral Spine X-Ray
X-rays are safe and have minimal radiation exposure. However, there is still a small risk of radiation exposure. There is also a small risk of developing an allergic reaction if contrast dye is used during the X-ray.
Why is a Lumbosacral Spine X-Ray Performed?
The X-ray is used to evaluate the lumbar spine structure and condition. It is used to diagnose conditions such as herniated discs, degenerative disc diseases, fractures, and tumors. It can also be used to monitor the spinal alignment or any adventitious changes such as forward or sideways bending of the spine.

A lumbosacral spine X-ray may be performed if you are experiencing back pain and your doctor wants to rule out a spinal condition. It is also used if a doctor suspects an underlying condition of the spine or if a patient is being monitored for a spinal disorder.
