What is Muscle Swelling?
Muscle swelling, also known as myositis, is a condition in which swelling or inflammation of the muscles occurs due to an injury or medical condition. It can be a serious and painful condition that affects the way a person moves and affects the functioning of the muscles affected.
Symptoms of Muscle Swelling
Symptoms of muscle swelling can include:
- Pain or ache in the affected muscle
- Stiffness, or difficulty moving the affected muscle
- Tenderness in the affected area
- Redness and/or swelling of the affected muscle
- Fever
Causes of Muscle Swelling
There are various causes of muscle swelling, including:
- Viral or bacterial infection
- Overuse of the muscles or joints
- Injury or trauma to the muscles
- Autoimmune diseases
- Certain drugs and medications
Treatment for Muscle Swelling
Treatment for muscle swelling will depend on the cause of the condition. Mild cases may not require any treatment, however, more serious cases may require medication, physical therapy, or even surgery. Common treatments include:
- Rest for the affected muscle
- Ice or heat treatments
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Corticosteroid injections
- Physical therapy
