Metastatic Estrogen Receptor Positive Breast Cancer

What is Metastatic Estrogen Receptor Positive Breast Cancer?

Metastatic estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer is an advanced cancer that has spread beyond the breast to other areas of the body. Metastatic breast cancer is also called advanced, secondary, stage IV or metastatic stage IV of breast cancer.

Metastatic estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer can be further defined as a type of breast cancer that has a receptor for the hormone estrogen. Breast cancers that are estrogen receptor-positive are able to grow and spread when estrogen attaches to the receptors on the cancer cells. The presence of estrogen receptors means the cancer may be responsive to treatments such as tamoxifen, a hormonal therapy medication that blocks estrogen effect on cancer cells.

Signs and Symptoms of Metastatic Estrogen Receptor Positive Breast Cancer

The most common symptoms of metastatic ER-positive breast cancer will depend on where in the body the cancer has spread. Common signs and symptoms can include:

  • Pain.
  • Lumps or masses in other organs or bones.
  • President of fluid or redness in the skin.
  • Weight loss.
  • Fatigue.

Diagnosis of Metastatic Estrogen Receptor Positive Breast Cancer

If a healthcare provider suspects metastatic ER-positive breast cancer, a biopsy of the area will be performed to confirm the diagnosis. The biopsy may include a chest X-ray, a CT scan, an MRI or a PET scan. Additionally, blood tests may be ordered to check for the presence of tumor markers. The results of these tests will help to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatments for Metastatic Estrogen Receptor Positive Breast Cancer

The treatment for metastatic ER-positive breast cancer will depend on several factors, including the size and location of the tumor, the patient’s age and overall health and, of course, the type of cancer. Generally, treatments may include:

  • Chemotherapy.
  • Hormonal therapy.
  • Targeted therapy.
  • Immunotherapy.
  • Surgery or radiation.

It is important to note that metastatic ER-positive breast cancer is still considered a serious and life-threatening condition. While advances in treatments have improved the prognosis for many metastatic ER-positive breast cancer patients, it is still important to seek treatment as soon as possible in order to have the best chance at a successful outcome.
