Bursitis

What Is Bursitis?

Bursitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that cushions the movement of muscles, bones, and tendons. Bursitis commonly affects the shoulder, elbow, knee, and hip, but can also affect other areas, such as the Achilles tendon. It is a common condition often caused by overuse, trauma, or repetitive movements.

Symptoms Of Bursitis

The main symptom of bursitis is pain—sharp, aching, or burning in the affected area. The pain may be localized to the bursa or radiate outward to other areas, and can worsen when pressure is applied or when certain movements are made. Other symptoms include joint stiffness, tenderness, swelling, and a feeling of warmth or heat in the affected area.

Treatment of Bursitis

Treatment for bursitis typically begins with rest and/or avoiding activities that cause the pain. Other treatments may include:

  • Ice or heat therapy
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or cortisone injections
  • Physical therapy
  • Surgery (in rare cases)
  • Ultrasound Theraphy

It is important to talk to your doctor about the best treatment for your condition.

Preventing Bursitis

With bursitis, prevention is key. Steps to reduce the chances of developing bursitis include:

  • Maintaining proper posture while standing and sitting
  • Ensuring you warm up and cool down before and after physical activity
  • Avoiding repetitive motions when possible
  • Wearing proper protective gear when engaging in physical activities
  • Avoiding overstressing the affected joint
  • Resting and icing the joint after injury or prolonged activity
