Tick-borne fever

Tick-borne Fever: What You Need to Know

Tick-borne fever (TBF) is a group of diseases caused by the bacterium Rickettsia species. The symptoms caused by these bacteria range from mild to severe and can sometimes be fatal. TBF is most commonly spread by ticks carrying the Rickettsia species that have bitten an animal or person. Those who come into contact with ticks should be aware of the potential dangers of TBF.

Symptoms of Tick-borne Fever

The symptoms of TBF can vary greatly, depending on the Rickettsia species responsible for the infection. Generally, however, patients with TBF may experience the following:

  • Fever, chills, and body aches
  • Weakness
  • Headache
  • Joint pain
  • Skin rash
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

In severe cases, people may experience confusion, seizures, and other neurological symptoms. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek prompt medical attention.

Preventing Tick-borne Fever

The best way to prevent TBF is to avoid contact with ticks. When in tick-infested areas, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and apply insect repellent that contains DEET or other approvedchemicals to your skin and clothes. Make sure to look for ticks before and after entering high-risk areas, and remember to carefully check pets and children for ticks, too.

It is also important to know the signs of ticks and to take steps to protect yourself. Signs to look for include small bumps or lesions on the skin or a “bull’s eye” rash. If you are worried that you may have been bitten by a tick and are experiencing any of the symptoms of TBF,seek immediate medical attention.
