Stye

What is a Stye?

A stye, also known as a hordeolum, is an inflamed red bump that develops on the eyelids due to an infection caused by either staphylococcus bacteria or a type of stable bacteria called demodex. This infection can create an itchy, painful lump near the edge of the eyelid.

What are the Symptoms of a Stye?

The most common symptom of a stye is a swollen, painful lump at the base of the eyelid that can range in size from a pencil eraser to a pea. Other symptoms include:

  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Itching
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Watery eyes

How is a Stye Treated?

Treatment for a stye typically involves self-care measures, such as applying a warm compress to the affected area several times a day. This can help bring the stye to a head and pave the way for its resolution. An antibiotic ointment or drops may also be prescribed in some cases to clear the infection. In rare cases, surgical drainage of the stye may be necessary.

How can a Stye be Prevented?

Good hygiene is the most important way to prevent styes. This means washing your hands often with soap and water and avoiding rubbing or touching your eyes. Disinfecting your contact lenses and case regularly will also help. It's also important to practice prevention for other eye infections like conjunctivitis.
