Amebiasis

What is Amebiasis?

Amebiasis is an infection of the intestines caused by a tiny protozoan parasite called Entamoeba histolytica. The parasite is spread primarily through the ingestion of contaminated food or water. It is estimated to affect up to 50 million people around the world, most of whom are in developing countries.

Symptoms of Amebiasis

The most common symptom of amebiasis is diarrhea, however, some people may not experience any symptoms at all. Other possible signs and symptoms of the infection include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Weight loss
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Bloody or mucous stools

Complications of Amebiasis

Amebiasis can lead to serious health issues if left untreated. If the infection spreads to other organs, it can cause organ abscesses, meningitis, and intestinal perforation, which can be life-threatening. In severe cases, the infection can spread to the liver and cause a condition called amebic liver abscess.

Treatment of Amebiasis

Amebiasis is usually treated with medications such as metronidazole or tinidazole. In some cases, doctors may recommend a combination of medications to treat the infection. Additionally, people with amebiasis should take measures to prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids. To prevent re-infection, it is important to practice good hygiene and wash hands thoroughly after using the bathroom.
