What Causes Shoulder Stiffness?

Shoulder stiffness can be caused by a number of things, including poor posture, overuse of the shoulder muscles, tendonitis, arthritis, and aging.

Poor posture is one of the most common causes of shoulder stiffness. Repetitive activities often lead to poor posture, leading to muscle contractions and strain. Prolonged use of the shoulder muscles puts them under prolonged tension, leading to inflammation and stiffness. Poor posture can also lead to impingement of the shoulder joint, further increasing stiffness.

Other causes of shoulder stiffness include tendonitis, which is an inflammation of the tendons due to overuse or age; and arthritis, which is caused by the deterioration of cartilage. Age can also be another cause of shoulder stiffness, as the joint’s range of motion decreases over time.

Treatments for Shoulder Stiffness

Treatments for shoulder stiffness usually include rest, ice or heat therapy, and various shoulder exercises. Anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed to help reduce swelling and inflammation. Physical therapy is often the recommended treatment, as it can help increase shoulder flexibility and strength.

  • Ice or Heat Therapy: Ice, applied for 20 minutes at a time, can help reduce inflammation and swelling, while heat may help relax tight muscles and improve blood flow.
  • Shoulder Exercises: Exercises targeting the shoulder muscles can help increase flexibility and range of motion in the joint, as well as relieve pain.
  • Medication: Anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, can be used to reduce swelling and pain.
  • Physical Therapy: Physical therapy can help improve strength and flexibility in the shoulder and surrounding muscles.
