Myringitis

What is Myringitis?

Myringitis is an infection of the eardrum, also known as the tympanic membrane. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi and is often very painful. Symptoms of myringitis include a sudden fever, earache that is worse when touched, hearing loss, itching or tingling sensation in the ear, and a visible bulge in the eardrum.

Treatments for Myringitis

Treatment for myringitis depends upon the underlying cause of the infection. In most cases, treatment involves antibiotics to fight the infection and pain relievers to reduce discomfort. Other treatments may include ear drops to relieve the pain and swelling, and a topical steroid to reduce inflammation. In severe cases, a surgical procedure may be necessary.

Tips to prevent Myringitis

The best way to prevent myringitis is to practice good hygiene. Keeping ears clean and dry is key to avoiding infection. Additionally, avoiding swimming in polluted water can help minimize the risk of infection. Swapping out earbuds and other ear accessories between uses can also reduce the risk of infection.

Home Remedies for Myringitis

Although medical treatment is usually necessary for myringitis, some home remedies may help reduce symptoms. A few considerations include:

  • Applying a warm compress to the ear for a few minutes several times per day to reduce swelling and pain.
  • Avoiding smoking and controlling allergies.
  • Using over-the-counter drops or sprays to minimize discomfort.
  • Staying hydrated.
  • Rinsing the ear with a mixture of water and white vinegar several times per day.
