- Infections – bacterial or viral infections are the source of some mouth sores, such as cold sores and canker sores.
- Allergies – food allergies or contact with certain substances, like makeup or toothpaste, can cause irritation in the mouth and lead to sores.
- Trauma – physical trauma to the mouth, such as biting your tongue or having braces adjusted, can cause sores.
- Medicines – certain medications can cause sores in the mouth.
- Hormones – hormonal changes, particularly in adolescent and pregnant women, can cause sores in the mouth.
