Inflammation of the External Auditory Canal

What is Inflammation of the External Auditory Canal?

Inflammation of the external auditory canal (EAC), also known as otitis externa, is an infection of the skin inside the ear canal. It is a common condition that can be caused by bacterial, fungal, or viral organisms.

The infection leads to inflammation and swelling of the EAC, which can cause pain, itching, and discharge. It can also affect hearing, balance, and other functions related to the ear.

Causes of Inflammation of the External Auditory Canal

The most common cause of inflammation of the EAC is an infection, which can be caused by bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It is important to note that water trapped in the ear canal can create an environment where these organisms can thrive.

Other causes of otitis externa include foreign objects, such as insects or beads, that can become lodged in the ear canal, as well as damage to the skin inside the ear. Allergies or skin diseases such as psoriasis or eczema can also contribute to EAC inflammation.

Symptoms of Inflammation of the External Auditory Canal

The most common symptoms of inflammation of the EAC include pain, itching, and discharge in the ear. There may also be redness, swelling, and tenderness in the area. Hearing loss, dizziness, and tinnitus can occur in more severe cases.

Treatment of Inflammation of the External Auditory Canal

Treatment for inflammation of the EAC depends on the cause of the infection. In mild cases, treatment may include cleaning and drying the ear, using antibiotic ear drops, and taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce pain and inflammation.

In more severe cases, oral antibiotics and steroids may be needed to manage the infection.
