Fungal Keratitis

What is Fungal Keratitis?

Fungal Keratitis is an infection of the outermost layer of the eye, the cornea. It is caused by a fungus, usually one of the fungi that inhabit the environment around us. It is the most common type of fungal eye infection and is more common in tropical climates.

Symptoms of Fungal Keratitis

Symptoms of Fungal Keratitis can include:

  • Redness of the eye
  • Sharp, stabbing pain
  • Excessive tearing
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurry vision or vision loss
  • A feeling of something in the eye

Diagnosis & Treatment of Fungal Keratitis

Diagnosis of Fungal Keratitis begins with an eye exam. Your doctor will examine your cornea for signs of infection and may take a sample of your eye's cells or fluids to identify the fungus responsible for the infection. Treatment includes the use of topical eyedrops containing antifungal medications. In more severe cases, a corneal transplant may be needed to treat the infection.

Prevention of Fungal Keratitis

The best way to prevent Fungal Keratitis is to take steps to protect your eyes. Wear protective eyewear when playing sports, swimming, or working around hazardous materials. Be sure to clean your contact lenses with fresh lens solution every day. Replace your lenses as often as directed by your doctor. Seek prompt medical treatment for any eye injury or infection.
