Cologuard

What is Cologuard?

Cologuard is a non-invasive screening test used to detect certain types of colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps in the colon and rectum. It is a test used to detect altered DNA and hemoglobin in your bowel motion. Cologuard has been approved by the FDA for use in adults aged 45-86 years old who are at average risk for colorectal cancer, and who have no current signs or symptoms of the disease.

Preparation for Cologuard Test

When preparing for a Cologuard test, there is no special prep required. Patients should just make sure to have fresh bowel movements prior to taking the test, and should follow the instructions included in the Cologuard kit.

Cologuard Procedure

The Cologuard procedure is simple and can be done at home. First, patients collect a stool sample at home and mail it in a special container to the Cologuard laboratory. Then, technicians at the Cologuard laboratory examine the sample for the presence of altered DNA and hemoglobin. The laboratory also checks for common markers of colorectal cancer. If the results are positive, the patient will be referred to a gastroenterologist for a follow-up colonoscopy.

Types of Cologuard

  • ColoGuard Standard – The standard Cologuard test checks for the presence of altered DNA and hemoglobin.
  • ColoGuard Plus – The Cologuard Plus test checks for the presence of altered DNA, hemoglobin, and for the presence of common colorectal cancer markers.

Risks Associated with Cologuard

There are no known risks associated with the Cologuard test. It is a non-invasive test, and the sample is collected and mailed in a special container to the clinical laboratory.

Why Have a Cologuard Test?

Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the US, accounting for nearly 10,000 deaths each year. Early detection of colorectal cancer can dramatically increase an individual’s chance of survival. Additionally, Cologuard is easy to use, non-invasive, and has been shown to have a greater accuracy than other non-invasive colorectal cancer screening tests.

When to Have a Cologuard Test

The Cologuard test is best for individuals aged 45-86 years old who are at average risk for colorectal cancer and who have no current signs or symptoms of the disease. For these individuals, the Cologuard test is recommended every 3 years. It is recommended that individuals at higher risk for developing colorectal cancer, including those with a family history of the disease, speak with their doctor about the best screening option for them.
