Sycosis barbae

What is Sycosis Barbae?

Sycosis barbae (SB) is a bacterial infection of the hair follicle, usually caused by a type of bacteria called staphylococcus. It typically affects bearded men and is sometimes known as “barber’s itch”.

The condition often occurs when hair follicles become clogged and inflamed due to shaving or the use of harsh skin care products. The bacterial infection thrives in the closed environment of the follicle, causing swelling, redness, and pain.

Symptoms of Sycosis Barbae

Common symptoms of SB include:

  • Redness and inflammation of the skin around the beard
  • Painful bumps or pustules in the area
  • Itching and burning sensations
  • Yellow or white pus in the affected area
  • Scabbing or peeling of the skin

In more severe cases, the infection can spread to the surrounding skin or lymph nodes, causing a fever, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes.

Treatment for Sycosis Barbae

Treatment for SB typically involves antibiotics. An antiseptic wash or topical cream may also be recommended to reduce inflammation and stop the spread of the infection.

In more severe cases, the infection may need to be treated with an oral antibiotic. In rare cases, surgery may be required to remove any abscesses or scar tissue caused by the infection.

Prevention of Sycosis Barbae

The key to preventing SB is to maintain good hygiene when shaving and using skin care products. Here are a few tips to help you avoid the condition:

  • Always use a sharp razor when shaving.
  • Use gentle shaving products, preferably ones that contain antiseptic ingredients like witch hazel or tea tree oil.
  • Make sure your shaving brush is clean and free of bacteria.
  • Wash your face with a gentle cleanser after shaving.
  • Avoid touching the infected area to prevent spreading the bacteria.

By following these simple steps, you can help reduce your risk of developing SB.
