Acne NOS

Acne NOS (Not Otherwise Specified):

Acne NOS (not otherwise specified) is a medical term that is used to describe a type of acne that does not fit into the other, more common types of acne. This condition may present with multiple types of acne lesions making it difficult for a diagnosis. Patients with Acne NOS may present with atypical acne symptoms such as cystic acne, blackheads, whiteheads, or lesions that seem to be a combination of other types of acne.

Factors and Symptoms:

There are a variety of factors that can contribute to the development of Acne NOS including hormonal imbalance, use of certain medications, and genetics. It is often difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of Acne NOS, which is why it is often classified as a catch-all for different types of acne. Common symptoms include red bumps or lesions on the skin, whiteheads, cysts, and nodules.

Treatment Options:

There are several treatment options available for Acne NOS including topical medications, oral antibiotics, and in some cases, isotretinoin (commonly referred to as Accutane). It is important to talk to your doctor before beginning any form of acne treatment, especially if you are taking other medications or have certain medical conditions.

  • Topical medications – these medications can help to reduce inflammation, reduce bacteria counts, and keep pores clear.
  • Oral antibiotics – these medications can help to reduce the amount of bacteria and help to reduce inflammation.
  • Isotretinoin – this medication is usually used if other treatment options are not effective. It works by reducing the amount of oil in the skin, which can help to reduce the number of acne lesions present.

In addition to medication, it is important to practice good hygiene to help reduce the severity of Acne NOS. Regular cleansing with a gentle cleanser and using noncomedogenic moisturizers can help to keep your skin clear and reduce the frequency of breakouts.
