Swelling of the spine

Swelling of the Spine

Swelling of the spine, or spinal edema, is an example of tissue swelling that can occur in the spine, or neck and spine region. Swelling of the spine is sometimes referred to as “spinal tension edema” because the spine’s discs naturally store water like a sponge. Swelling in this area is caused by fluid retention, inflammation, damage to the discs, and other medical conditions.

Symptoms of Swelling of the Spine

The most common symptoms of swelling of the spine are pain, numbness, or burning sensations in the cervical spine or neck, followed by pain in the thoracic and lumbar spine. Other symptoms can include tightness of the underlying muscles; difficulty bending, rotating, and arching the back; and localized swelling.

Causes of Swelling of the Spine

  • Infection
  • Allergies
  • Inflammation
  • Accidents and Injury
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Spinal curvature or deformities
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Poor posture
  • Improper pattern of movement
  • Lack of physical activity

Treatment of Swelling of the Spine

Treatment of swelling of the spine should be tailored to the individual’s specific condition and symptoms. Common treatments include anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, cold laser therapy, acupuncture, trigger point injections, and heat or ice therapy. Surgery may be necessary if the condition is causing significant pain or is blocking nerve signals.
