What are Neurotic Disorders?

Neurotic disorders are the most common and typically mildest form of mental health disorder. Neurotic disorders are characterized by intense emotional disturbances in which feelings of anxiety, fear, anger, guilt or sadness affect a person’s behavior, thoughts and relationships. People with neurotic disorders often feel immobilized by their emotions and find it hard to function.

Common symptoms of neurotic disorders include:

  • Difficulty in concentrating
  • Irritability and restlessness
  • Feelings of being overwhelmed
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Emotional outbursts
  • Feelings of helplessness
  • Excessive worrying
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Lack of pleasure or satisfaction

Neurotic or personality disorders can range from mild to severe. Milder forms of these disorders may cause some disruption in a person’s daily activities, while more severe forms can interfere with daily living and completely disrupt normal functioning.

Types of Neurotic Disorders

There are several types of neurotic disorders, including:

  • Anxiety disorders. These include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia and post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Mood or affective disorders. These include depression and dysthymia, bipolar disorder.
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorders. These include obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and body dysmorphic disorder.
  • Personality disorders. These include antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, and narcissistic personality disorder.

Treatment for Neurotic Disorders

Treatment for neurotic disorders often involves a combination of psychotherapy and medications. Psychotherapy can help a person understand their feelings and behavior in order to make changes and cope more effectively. Medications, such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs, may also be recommended to reduce symptoms of neurotic disorders.

In addition, relaxation techniques and lifestyle changes can be helpful in managing symptoms. Exercise can help reduce stress and improve mood, while eating a healthy diet and getting enough sleep are also important. Finally, connecting with a supportive network can be helpful in managing symptoms of neurotic disorders.
