Soft Tissue Inflammation

Soft tissue inflammation is a condition where the body’s soft tissues become swollen and inflamed due to an injury or illness. Common causes of soft tissue inflammation include strains and sprains, infection, and overuse of muscles and joints. Depending on the cause of the inflammation, symptoms can range from minor pain and stiffness to significant swelling and muscle pain. Treatment may include the use of medications, physical therapy, and rest.

Symptoms of Soft Tissue Inflammation

The symptoms of soft tissue inflammation vary depending on the cause and the exact location of the inflammation. Generally speaking, common symptoms can include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Stiffness
  • Tenderness
  • A decrease in range of motion
  • Cramping
  • Heat

Causes of Soft Tissue Inflammation

Soft tissue inflammation can be caused by a variety of different things. Common causes include:

  • Overuse or repetitive use of a body part
  • Injury (such as a sprain, strain, or fracture)
  • Chronic diseases or disorders (such as arthritis or fibromyalgia)
  • Infection (such as a bacterial or viral infection)
  • Allergic reaction

Treatment for Soft Tissue Inflammation

The most common approach for treating soft tissue inflammation is the RICE method, which stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. This involves resting the affected area, applying ice or cold packs to reduce inflammation, wearing a compression bandage to reduce swelling, and keeping the area elevated. Depending on the cause of the inflammation, additional treatments may be needed, such as medications, physical therapy, or surgery.

Preventing Soft Tissue Inflammation

In order to prevent soft tissue inflammation, it is important to practice proper form when performing any type of exercise or physical activity. It is also important to warm up before any strenuous activity and to cool down after. Stretching before and after activity can also help reduce the risk of developing soft tissue inflammation. Additionally, wearing the proper protective gear when playing contact sports is also important to reduce the risk of sustaining an injury.
