Tinea inguinalis

What is Tinea Inguinalis?

Tinea inguinalis, also known as “jock itch” is a fungal infection of the groin area caused by a type of fungus called tinea. This infection is extremely contagious and can be spread through contact with someone who has the infection or through contact with contaminated items, such as clothing or towels. Tinea inguinalis is more common in men than women, as the male anatomy generally has more warm, moist areas that are suitable for fungal growth.

Symptoms of Tinea Inguinalis

The most common symptoms of tinea inguinalis include:

  • Red, itchy skin in the groin area and sometimes on the thighs and buttocks
  • Scaling, cracking, and an inflamed rash
  • Soreness and discomfort in the affected area
  • A strong, musty odor that is caused by the fungus

Treatments for Tinea Inguinalis

Tinea inguinalis can usually be treated at home with over-the-counter antifungal creams or ointments. Applying the medication directly to the affected area will help to control the fungus and reduce the symptoms. The treatment typically takes two to four weeks to cure the infection completely. If the infection does not respond to over-the-counter treatments, then a doctor can prescribe a stronger medication.

Preventing the Spread of Tinea Inguinalis

The best way to prevent the spread of tinea inguinalis is to practice good hygiene habits. It’s important to keep the area clean and dry, and to avoid sharing clothing, towels, and other personal items with others. Scrub gym clothes and locker-room towels thoroughly before reuse, and make sure to wear clean underwear and socks daily.
