Refractory Hodgkin Lymphoma

What Is Refractory Hodgkin’s Lymphoma?

Refractory Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer that affects the lymphatic system. Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a relatively rare form of cancer caused when lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) become abnormal and begin to multiply rapidly. Refractory Hodgkin’s lymphoma is an advanced form of the disease and is characterized by the cancer cells not responding to the treatments that are typically used to treat Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Symptoms of Refractory Hodgkin's Lymphoma

The symptoms of Refractory Hodgkin’s Lymphoma are the same as those of regular Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. These may include:

  • Enlarged lymph nodes.
  • Fatigue.
  • Fever.
  • Weight loss.
  • Night sweats.
  • Itching.

Diagnosis and Treatment

In order to diagnose Refractory Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, doctors will typically perform a physical examination, followed by imaging tests and a biopsy. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, doctors may recommend different types of treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and stem cell transplants.

The goal of treatment is to destroy the cancerous cells and keep them from reproducing. If the cancer cells emerge in the body again after treatment, doctors have to revise the treatment plan.

Outlook

The prognosis for people with Refractory Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is not as good as for those with other forms of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. However, with the right treatment, some people can achieve long-term remission and live a healthy life.

It is important for people with Refractory Hodgkin’s Lymphoma to stay positive and embrace a healthy lifestyle, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate rest.
