PTSD Symptoms

PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, is a psychological disorder caused by experiencing a traumatic event. A traumatic event is an experience or event that involves the direct or indirect threat of physical or psychological harm caused by natural disasters, terrorist attacks, serious accidents, physical or sexual assault, or even enduring abuse. The symptoms and signs of PTSD may worsen over time and can vary depending on the individual.

Some common PTSD symptoms include:

  • Recurring, flashback memories or nightmares of the traumatic event
  • Feelings of sadness, guilt, and fear
  • Irritability, angry outbursts or aggressive behavior
  • Avoiding conversations or activities related to the event
  • Feeling detached or emotionally numb
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
  • Hypervigilance and an exaggerated startle reaction

These symptoms may interfere with a person's life, making it difficult for them to have successful relationships and perform in work or school. As such, it is essential to seek treatment for PTSD in order to help manage the symptoms and prevent them from becoming worse.
