Postnasal drip

What is Postnasal Drip?

Postnasal drip refers to mucus that drains from the back of your nose to the back of your throat. Everyone produces mucus every day, and in healthy individuals, it is usually swallowed unconsciously. However, in cases of postnasal drip, the production of mucus is excessive and causes symptoms such as a sore or irritated throat, a feeling of having a lump in your throat, and a need to frequently clear your throat.

Causes

Postnasal drip is usually due to a cold or allergies, which can cause inflammation of the upper airways and an excessive production of mucus. Other causes can include sinus infections and changes in climate or weather.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of postnasal drip include a sore or irritated throat due to the constant drainage of mucus, a feeling of having a lump in your throat, and a partial blocking of your nasal passages.

Treatment

Treatment for postnasal drip varies depending on the underlying cause. Common treatments include:

  • Nasal sprays or decongestants to reduce inflammation
  • Antihistamines to reduce allergic reactions or reduce secretions
  • Corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and mucus production
  • Saline nasal washes to reduce inflammation and clear mucus

In addition, make sure to drink plenty of fluids, take a humidifier or steam showers to moisten your nasal passages, and avoid irritants such as smoke, dust, and strong smells.
