Oral Discomfort and Pain: What Causes It and How to Treat It

We all spend a lot of time talking, chewing, and performing other activities with our mouths, so it is no surprise that we occasionally experience oral discomfort and pain. From a small cut on your cheek from biting down too hard on a piece of food to a serious cavity, this discomfort can range from mild to severe.

The most common cause of oral discomfort and pain is dental problems. This includes cavities, gum disease, infections, decay, and breaks or chips in a tooth. Additionally, some medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, may cause pain or inflammation in the mouth. Other causes of oral discomfort and pain may include allergies, cold sores, dry mouth, tempormandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, and root canals.

Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to help relieve your oral discomfort or pain. Here are a few tips:

  • Brush and floss your teeth twice a day, and keep regular dental appointments.
  • Use an over-the-counter mouth rinse formulated to relieve pain or a mild antiseptic to help reduce inflammation.
  • Suck on a piece of sugar-free hard candy or chew sugar-free gum to help stimulate saliva production and reduce dryness in your mouth or throat.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and eat a balanced diet.
  • Try to relax and avoid stressful situations.
  • If the discomfort persists, contact your dentist for further assessment and treatment.

It is important to be aware of any pain or discomfort in your mouth, as it could be a sign that something is wrong. Early treatment of an oral problem can significantly reduce the amount of pain or discomfort you experience and help you get back to enjoying a pain-free life again.
