nonmetastatic Osteosarcoma

What is Non-Metastatic Osteosarcoma?

Osteosarcoma is a type of cancer in which malignant, or cancerous, cells form within the bones. It is the most common type of bone cancer and occurs primarily in children and young adults. Non-metastatic osteosarcoma is a localized type of the disease that has not spread to other areas of the body.

Types of Non-Metastatic Osteosarcoma

Non-metastatic osteosarcoma can be divided into two types: the high-grade form, which is aggressive, and the low-grade form, which is less aggressive. The high-grade form is more likely to spread to other areas of the body and the low-grade form is more likely to respond to treatment.

Symptoms of Non-Metastatic Osteosarcoma

The main symptom of non-metastatic osteosarcoma is a lump or swelling in the area of the tumor. Other common symptoms include pain in the affected area, particularly when the tumor is located in a bone, and fatigue and weight loss due to the body's reaction to the tumor.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Non-Metastatic Osteosarcoma

Non-metastatic osteosarcoma is typically diagnosed using an X-ray, CT scan, or MRI, which can help determine the size and location of the tumor. Treatment may involve surgery to remove the tumor, chemotherapy to fight the cancer cells, and/or radiation therapy to shrink the tumor.

Possible Complications of Non-Metastatic Osteosarcoma

The main complication of non-metastatic osteosarcoma is the risk of it spreading to other parts of the body. This is especially true for the high-grade form. Additionally, treatment may cause damage to nearby healthy tissues and organs, nerve damage, and other side effects.

Living With Non-Metastatic Osteosarcoma

Patients with non-metastatic osteosarcoma may need to make lifestyle changes in order to manage the condition. This may include getting enough rest, eating a healthy diet, avoiding activities or sports that may cause injury to the affected area, and making regular visits to the doctor for follow-up care.
