Malignancies

Malignancy: What Is It and What Causes It?

Malignancy, or cancer, is the growth of abnormal cells that divide in an uncontrolled manner and usually without any regard for longevity. The abnormal cells can form a tumor and encroach on healthy tissue. There are more than one hundred different types of cancer that begin in different types of cells. Types include:

  • Lung cancer
  • Brain cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Stomach cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Prostate cancer

The exact cause of cancer is not known. However, there are many factors that have been associated with the development of cancer. They include:

  • Exposure to radiation, such as X-rays and Ultraviolet radiation from the sun
  • Exposure to carcinogenic chemicals found in the environment that include asbestos, diesel fumes, and tobacco smoke
  • Exposure to certain viruses and bacteria
  • An unhealthy diet that does not contain adequate amounts of fruits and vegetables, which contain protective antioxidants
  • Obesity, which has been linked to certain types of cancer
  • Genetic predisposition, which may cause abnormal cell growth

If you have cancer, your doctor will want to know as much as possible about your medical history and any lifestyle factors that may have led to the development of your cancer. Treatment options vary depending on the type and stage of the cancer. Treatment can include:

  • Surgery – to remove the tumor or cancerous cells
  • Chemotherapy – to kill the cancer cells
  • Radiation therapy – to kill the cancer cells
  • Immunotherapy – to boost the body’s own immune system in order to fight the cancer
  • Hormone therapy – to control or stop the growth of certain cancers
  • Targeted therapy – to target and kill specific cancer cells

It is important to remember that early detection and diagnosis can be key to successful treatment. Regular check-ups and screenings are important for detecting any changes to cancer so that it can be treated as early as possible. Early detection and treatment can improve the chances of successful treatment and a positive outcome.
