Heat rash

What Is Heat Rash?

Heat rash, also known as prickly heat, is a common skin problem that occurs when sweat becomes trapped in the skin, clogging the sweat ducts and causing inflammation. Heat rash often appears in warm climates or when a person becomes too warm, such as during exercise or after a hot shower. It may cause a burning or prickling sensation, as well as an itchy red rash with small bumps or pimples.

Symptoms of Heat Rash

The rash usually appears as small, red pimples or bumps that often become raised and may be associated with a tingling or prickling sensation. It is typically found in areas of the body where sweat tends to accumulate, such as the chest, back, crotch, armpits, neck, or inside of elbows, knees, legs, and ankles. In some cases, the rash may be painful or painful to the touch. It can usually be treated at home without medical intervention.

Causes of Heat Rash

Heat rash is caused by overheating where the sweat ducts become blocked and sweat accumulates in the skin. Sweat glands can be blocked due to wearing clothing that is too tight or from waxes, such as sunscreen, lotions, or creams. It may also occur due to exercise or intense physical activity, hot weather, prolonged exposure to high temperatures, sitting in a hot environment for too long, or using hot tubs.

Treatment for Heat Rash

There are several steps to take to treat heat rash:

  • Move to a cooler area and remove any tight clothing.
  • Keep the affected area clean and dry.
  • Use cool cloths or ice packs to soothe and reduce inflammation.
  • Try using over-the-counter anti-itch creams or other lotions to reduce discomfort.
  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids.
  • Avoid hot showers or baths and use lukewarm water instead.
  • Avoid irritating cosmetic products and perfumes.
  • Talk to your doctor about anti-inflammatory medications, as these may be beneficial in some cases.
