Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety is a normal emotion we all feel from time to time. Feeling anxious sometimes is a normal part of life and helps us deal with important events. But for some people, the anxiety never stops affecting them. When this occurs, it can be a sign of an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorder in the United States, affecting more than 40 million adults.

Anxiety disorders come in many shapes and sizes, including:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) – a persistent psychological disorder of intense worry and fear
  • Panic Disorder – sudden feelings of intense anxiety, fear and dread
  • Social Anxiety Disorder – overwhelming fear of being judged by others
  • Phobias – irrational fear of particular objects or situations
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions)

Anxiety disorders can cause severe physical and psychological symptoms that can significantly interfere with a person’s daily life. Symptoms may include: difficulty concentrating, restlessness, fatigue, irritability, muscle tension, difficulty sleeping, and racing thoughts. If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek out help from a mental health professional. Common treatment options for anxiety disorders include medication, psychotherapy, and lifestyle changes.
