Itching caused by Hemorrhoids

Itching Caused by Hemorrhoids

Itching caused by hemorrhoids can range from mild to severe and may become more intense during flare-ups. The itching sensation can be so strong that it can make it difficult to concentrate on everyday activities. Fortunately, there are simple strategies that can help soothe the itch and provide some relief from the discomfort associated with hemorrhoids.

The most common causes of irritation from hemorrhoids include:

  • Excess moisture – This can be caused by sweating, sitting for long periods of time, or not properly cleaning the anal area.
  • Increased pressure – Pressure from straining during bowel movements increases the risk of hemorrhoids and the associated itching.
  • Poor hygiene – Poor cleaning or hygiene of the anal area can lead to a build-up of bacteria and other irritants which can cause itching.
  • Inflammation – Inflammation of the anal area due to hemorrhoids can also cause itching and discomfort.

The following strategies can help alleviate the itching associated with hemorrhoids:

  • Keep the anal area clean. Gently clean the anal area with warm water several times a day. Avoid using soap, as it can further irritate the area.
  • Keep the anal area dry. Apply talcum powder or cornstarch to help absorb any excess moisture in the area.
  • Avoid scratching. Scratching the anal area can introduce more bacteria into the area and further aggravate the itching.
  • Take a sitz bath. Sitting in a warm bath for 10-15 minutes several times a day can help soothe itchy skin and reduce inflammation.
  • Use topical treatments. Over-the-counter creams, gels, or ointments can help reduce itching and provide relief from discomfort.
  • Eat a high-fiber diet. A diet high in fiber can help soften stools and reduce straining during bowel movements which can ultimately help reduce the itching associated with hemorrhoids.
  • Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of fluids can help keep the stool soft and reduce irritation.

In addition to the strategies above, if the itching is severe and persists for more than a few days, a doctor should be consulted for further evaluation and treatment.
