What is a Cortisol Test?

A cortisol test is a blood test used to measure the level of the hormone cortisol in the body. Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland in response to stress. Types of Cortisol Test

When Are Cortisol Tests Done?

Cortisol tests are typically done when someone is experiencing symptoms that suggest problems with cortisol production, such as extreme fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, and dehydration.

What Are the Risks of a Cortisol Test?

The risks associated with a cortisol test are small and typically limited to lightheadedness and bruising at the puncture site. It is important to drink plenty of fluids before and after the test to help flush the cortisol from the system.

How to Prepare for a Cortisol Test?

  • Inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking.
  • Avoid eating and drinking anything other than water for 8 hours before the test.
  • Avoid caffeine for 12 hours before the test.
  • Avoid exercise for 24 hours before the test.
  • Do not smoke for 30 minutes before the test.

What Can the Results of a Cortisol Test Show?

The results of a cortisol test can be used to diagnose or monitor conditions related to overproduction (Cushing’s syndrome) or underproduction (Addison’s disease) of cortisol. Results can also be used to diagnose and monitor other conditions, such as pituitary gland and adrenal gland problems.
