Vaginal Candidiasis

Vaginal Candidiasis

Vaginal candidiasis is a fungal infection commonly caused by the yeast Candida albicans. It is commonly referred to as a yeast infection, though other types of fungal infections can also cause it. This type of infection can occur in both men and women, but it is more common in women.

The most common symptom of a vaginal yeast infection is itching near the start of the vaginal canal. Other symptoms can include soreness, burning, and redness. Vaginal discharge may also have an unpleasant smell and may be thicker than usual. In more severe cases, pain during sexual intercourse and urination may occur.

The most common cause of vaginal candidiasis is the overuse of antibiotics. Antibiotics can kill beneficial bacteria, which in turn causes the growth of harmful bacteria such as Candida, leading to a yeast infection. Other factors that can contribute to vaginal candidiasis include uncontrolled diabetes, obesity, pregnancy, stress, steroid use, and hormonal changes.

Fortunately, vaginal candidiasis can often be treated quickly and easily with antifungal medications. These medications can either be applied directly to the affected area or taken orally. It is important to follow the instructions given on the package and to finish the entire course of treatment, even if the symptoms start to improve.
