Upper airway congestion

Upper Airway Congestion

Upper airway congestion is an uncomfortable and annoying feeling associated with clogged, stuffy nasal passages caused by inflammation of the mucous membranes that line the airways. This inflammation can be caused by allergies, colds, sinusitis, or other respiratory infections.

Upper airway congestion can be uncomfortable and make it difficult to breathe through the nose, leading to fatigue, reduced productivity, and poor sleep. It can also lead to mild headaches, sneezing, and post-nasal drip.

Common symptoms of upper airway congestion include:

  • Stuffy nose and post-nasal drip
  • Sore throat
  • Coughing and sneezing
  • Mild headaches
  • Fatigue and difficulty concentrating

Treatment of upper airway congestion will depend on its underlying cause. Allergy sufferers should reduce exposure to allergens. Those with a cold or flu may benefit from decongestants, antihistamines, or nasal sprays. Sinus infections may require antibiotics or steroid nasal sprays.

In short-term cases of upper airway congestion, using a humidifier, drinking plenty of water, and taking over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen may help reduce symptoms. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention.
