What Is Trichomonas Vaginitis?

Trichomonas vaginitis, commonly known as trichomoniasis, is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a single-celled parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. It is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections and is known to cause irritation and discomfort in both men and women.

Trichomonas is usually spread through sexual contact with an infected person, through exchange of bodily fluids. It can also be spread through non-sexual contact with objects contaminated by an infected person. The infection may also be spread to an infant during delivery.

Signs and Symptoms of Trichomonas Vaginitis

The most common symptom of trichomonas vaginitis is a frothy and smelly yellowish-green vaginal discharge. Other symptoms include:

  • Vaginal itching, burning, or redness
  • Painful urination or intercourse
  • Painful or difficult bowel movements
  • Vaginal bleeding between periods
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge

In men, the symptoms may be less noticeable. The most common symptom in men is painful urination. Other symptoms may include irritation or itching inside the penis, and a discharge.

Treatment for Trichomonas Vaginitis

The treatment for trichomonas vaginitis usually involves a single dose of antibiotics. In cases where the infection is severe or recurring, a longer course of antibiotics may be prescribed. In addition, it is important to abstain from sexual activity until treatment is completed and any sexual partners need to be tested and treated as well.

It is important to avoid sexual contact until the infection has cleared up, and to practice safe sex with latex condoms.
