What Is Streptococcal Pharyngitis?

Streptococcal pharyngitis, commonly referred to as strep throat, is an infection caused by the group A Streptococcus bacteria. Strep throat is a common condition with a wide range of symptoms. Strep throat typically causes a sore throat, fever, red and swollen tonsils, and tender, swollen lymph nodes in the neck.

Causes Of Streptococcal Pharyngitis

Strep throat is caused by the group A Streptococcus bacteria, commonly known as “strep.” It's highly contagious and spreads when an infected person sneezes or coughs, or when someone comes into contact with the infected person's saliva, mucus, or other secretions. The infected person usually feels the worst within a few days of becoming ill.

Symptoms Of Streptococcal Pharyngitis

Strep throat can cause a wide range of uncomfortable symptoms, including:

  • Sore throat
  • Fever (usually 101°F or higher)
  • Red and swollen tonsils
  • White patches on the tonsils and/or throat
  • Headache
  • Rash
  • Tender, swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • Body aches
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Pain when swallowing

Diagnosis Of Streptococcal Phayngitis

The only way to confirm strep throat is to have a swab of the throat taken and sent for testing. The swab is tested for the presence of the bacteria.

Treatment Of Streptococcal Pharyngitis

Strep throat can be treated with antibiotics, such as penicillin, amoxicillin, and certain other medications. It's important to take the entire course of antibiotics as prescribed by the doctor to prevent the infection from coming back. In addition, certain over-the-counter pain medications can help relieve the symptoms of strep throat.
