Sneezing

All about Sneezing

A sneeze, individually known as a sternutation, is a sudden, controlled, outward release of air from the lungs through the nose and often the mouth. It is most often caused by irritation to the nasal mucosa, but can also be triggered in response to a strong emotion, such as fear, surprise, anger, or joy. A sneeze expels air forcefully from the mouth and nose in an explosive, spasmodic involuntary action resulting chiefly from irriation of the nasal mucous membrane.

Causes of Sneezing

Common causes of sneezing can include irritation to the nose and nasal cavities by things such as dust, pollen, animal dander, and even items of strong scent. Sneezing can also result from a cold, the flu, a sinus infection or even allergies. More rarely, it can be caused by exposure to bright lights, eating spicy food, or a neurological condition.

Preventing Sneezing

To prevent sneezing, the most important thing to do is to avoid irritants such as dust, pet dander, and strong scents. Keeping the home clean and dust free can help to reduce sneezing. Using a humidifier or dehumidifier to control the humidity level in the home may also help. Allergy sufferers should also try to reduce their exposure to known allergens such as pollen, pet dander, and mold.

Ways to Stop Sneezing

Some of the most effective ways to stop a sneezing fit include:

  • Breathing in through the mouth and out through the nose.
  • Taking a deep breath and holding it for a few seconds.
  • Pinching the bridge of the nose with the thumb and index finger.
  • Pressing a cold cloth or ice cube to the bridge of the nose.
