Ketosis

What is Ketosis?

Ketosis is a natural metabolic state that occurs when the body does not have enough carbohydrates to burn for energy. When this happens, the body starts to break down fat for energy, which produces ketones. This metabolic state is called ketosis.

Ketosis has been linked to a number of potential health benefits, including weight loss, improved mental clarity, and increased energy levels. Additionally, it may be beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, and metabolic syndrome.

How to Get Into Ketosis

The most effective way to enter ketosis is to follow a low-carb, high-fat diet. This means eating mostly healthy fats, such as those found in olive oil, avocados, nuts, and eggs, while limiting carbohydrate intake to less than 50 grams per day. Eating a ketogenic diet provides the body with the necessary nutrients to switch to producing ketones for fuel.

In addition to limiting carbs, people can increase their ketone levels by exercising, fasting, and taking exogenous ketone supplements.

Benefits of Ketosis

Ketosis has been linked to some impressive health benefits, including:

  • Weight loss: Following a ketogenic diet may promote faster weight loss than a traditional low-fat diet.
  • Mental clarity: People may experience improved mental clarity, focus, and memory while in ketosis.
  • Satiety: Eating a high-fat, low-carb diet may help you feel fuller longer, leading to fewer cravings.
  • Increased energy: Ketones produced during ketosis can provide a steady source of energy for the body.
  • Lower blood sugar levels: For people with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, ketosis may help reduce blood sugar levels.
  • Increased “good” HDL cholesterol: Research suggests that following a ketogenic diet may improve “good” HDL cholesterol levels.
