Understanding Joint Inflammation

Joint inflammation is a condition that occurs when the tissue around a joint becomes swollen, stiff, and painful. There are many different types of joint inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and gout. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced range of motion.

Joint inflammation can be caused by many different factors, including traumatic injury, age-related wear and tear, medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, infections, and even autoimmune conditions.

Treatments for Joint Inflammation

Treatment for joint inflammation often depends on the underlying cause. Common treatments may include anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary.


Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used to reduce pain and inflammation. Common over-the-counter NSAIDs include ibuprofen and naproxen. Your doctor may also prescribe stronger medications, such as steroids or disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs).


Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and exercise can help improve joint range of motion, reduce pain, and increase strength. Working with a physical therapist or an occupational therapist can help you learn new ways to move and maintain joint function.

Lifestyle Changes

Making lifestyle changes can help reduce joint inflammation and improve joint function. These may include things such as:

  • Losing weight if you are overweight
  • Getting regular exercise
  • Eating a healthy, anti-inflammatory diet
  • Quitting smoking
  • Staying hydrated

It is also important to take breaks when doing activities that require repetitive movement, such as typing. Taking breaks and avoiding activities that cause joint pain or aggravate existing pain can help reduce joint inflammation.
