Heart Failure

What is Heart Failure?

Heart failure is a condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to the rest of the body. This can occur due to a number of factors, such as coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, an enlarged heart, and other heart diseases. Symptoms of heart failure include shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling in the legs and feet.

Treatments for Heart Failure

Treatment for heart failure typically consists of lifestyle modifications, medications, and in some cases surgical procedures.

  • Lifestyle modifications – These include maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, following a low-salt diet, and quitting smoking.
  • Medications – Common medications used to treat heart failure include diuretics, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, and ARBs.
  • Surgical procedures – In some cases, surgical procedures may be necessary to treat heart failure, such as a heart transplant or the implantation of a pacemaker.

Preventing Heart Failure

The best way to prevent heart failure is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and quitting smoking. Additionally, managing risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes can help reduce the risk of developing heart failure.
