Allergies

What are Allergies?

Allergies are an overreaction of the immune system to a foreign substance, called an allergen. Allergens are typically harmless to most people, but individuals with allergies have an adverse reaction when exposed to them.

Common Allergens

Some of the most common allergens include:

  • Dust mites
  • Animal dander
  • Pollen
  • Mold
  • Food
  • Insect stings
  • Medications

Types of Allergic Reactions

An allergic reaction may cause a range of symptoms that can be mild or severe, and may include itching, sneezing, hives, swelling, and difficulty breathing. In severe cases, anaphylaxis can occur, which is a potentially life-threatening condition.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Allergies

A doctor may diagnose an allergy through skin or blood tests. Treatment for allergies may include antihistamines, decongestants, inhalers, and allergen immunotherapy. In some cases, avoidance of the allergen is the best treatment.

Living With Allergies

People who have allergies can manage their condition by understanding their triggers and avoiding them when possible. It is also important to be prepared for reactions and have an emergency plan in place for more serious reactions.
