Allergic Conditions

What is an Allergic Condition?

An allergic condition is an abnormal response to a substance that comes into contact with or is ingested by the body. Allergic reactions are caused by the body's immune system reacting to a substance or allergen. Common allergens include certain foods, pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and insect stings. Depending on the severity of an individual’s allergies, the symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening.

Types of Allergic Conditions

The following are some of the more common types of allergic conditions people may suffer from:

  • Food Allergy: A food allergy is when the body's immune system overreacts to a specific food or nutrient. Common food allergies include milk, eggs, gluten, peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish.
  • Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever): Allergic rhinitis is an allergy to airborne particles such as pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. Symptoms can include sneezing, itchy eyes and nose, and runny nose.
  • Asthma: Asthma is a chronic lung condition that can cause difficulty breathing due to tightening of the airways. Allergens such as dust, pet dander, mold, and pollen can trigger an asthma attack in those with sensitive immune systems.
  • Skin Allergies: Allergic reactions on the skin can range from itchy red bumps to hives or rashes. These reactions are caused by contact with allergens such as latex, detergents, and cosmetics.
  • Anaphylaxis: Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur when an individual is exposed to an allergen. It is characterized by difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat or tongue, a rash, and dizziness.

Treating Allergic Conditions

The best way to treat an allergic condition is to identify and avoid known allergens. Additionally, some people may use non-prescription medications such as antihistamines to control their symptoms. In more severe cases, a doctor may prescribe an epinephrine auto-injector to treat anaphylaxis.

It is important to speak to a doctor to discuss the best treatment options for your individual situation.
