Acute nasopharyngitis

What Is Acute Nasopharyngitis?

Acute nasopharyngitis, commonly known as a common cold, is a type of viral infection that affects the nose and throat. The most common symptoms of acute nasopharyngitis are a sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headache, and sneezing. It is usually mild and typically lasts for around seven to ten days.

It is important to note that although the common cold is a viral infection, it is caused by a number of different viruses, including rhinoviruses, coronaviruses, influenza viruses, and adenoviruses. Additionally, there is no cure for the common cold, but symptoms can be managed with over-the-counter medications and self-care measures.

Treatment for Acute Nasopharyngitis

Since the common cold is caused by a virus, antibiotics are not used to treat it. Instead, treatment focuses on symptom management. Some of the most commonly used treatments for the common cold include:

  • Over-the-Counter Medications: Commonly used medications, such as decongestants, expectorants, and analgesics, can be used to relieve symptoms.
  • Rest: Getting plenty of rest is important in order to help the body fight off the infection.
  • Fluids: Drinking lots of fluids, such as water, can help to keep the body hydrated and can help thin out mucus secretions.
  • Gargling: Gargling with warm salt water can help soothe the throat and reduce the intensity of a sore throat.
  • Nasal Irrigation: Using a neti pot or other nose irrigation device can help to remove excess mucus from the nose and reduce symptoms of congestion.

In some cases, the symptoms of the common cold may last for longer than ten days or may be more severe. If this occurs, it is important to contact a healthcare professional in order to determine the best course of treatment.
