Vitamin D Test
What is A Vitamin D Test?
A vitamin D test is a blood test that measures the amount of vitamin D in your body. Vitamin D is a very important nutrient that your body needs to stay healthy. It helps to absorb calcium and build strong bones. Low levels of vitamin D can cause a variety of health problems.
Preparation for Vitamin D Test
No preparation is required for a vitamin D test, as it is typically done as part of a routine physical exam or blood test.
Types of Vitamin D Test
The two main types of vitamin D tests are:
- Vitamin D-25 hydroxy test- This measures the level of the main type of vitamin D, which is called 25-hydroxyvitamin D.
- Vitamin D-1,25 dihydroxy test- This measures the level of a lesser-known type of vitamin D, which is called 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. This test is typically only used to evaluate people who have certain disorders that involve the bones or kidneys.
Why Get A Vitamin D Test?
Your doctor may order a vitamin D test if they suspect you have low levels of this important nutrient. Low levels of vitamin D can cause a wide range of health problems, including weak bones, muscle strength, and a weakened immune system. People who are at a higher risk for low vitamin D levels include those who are:
- Older than 65
- Obese
- Have darker skin
- Spend a lot of time indoors
- Live in northern climates
- Take medications that interfere with vitamin D absorption
When to Get Tested?
If you have any of the risk factors listed above, your doctor may recommend that you get a vitamin D test to check your levels. Additionally, if you are experiencing symptoms such as frequent infections, muscle weakness, or bone pain, your doctor may recommend a vitamin D test.
Risks of Vitamin D Test
Vitamin D tests are generally considered safe, with no known risks associated with them.
