Subacute Bursitis

What is Subacute Bursitis?

Bursitis is a condition of inflammation of the bursa. It's a small fluid-filled sac that acts as a cushion between tendons, muscles, bones, and joints. When it becomes inflamed, it can cause pain and stiffness.

Subacute bursitis is an irritation of the bursa, but between an acute flare up and a chronic, more long-term inflammation. This condition can happen in one of one of the bursae in the body (there are more than 150 bursae located throughout) and is often caused by certain actions and activities, such as lifting, repetitive motion, or pressure on particular parts of the body.

Symptoms of Subacute Bursitis

The most common symptom of subacute bursitis is a dull, aching pain that is felt in the affected area. This may be coupled with swelling and stiffness. It may also be difficult to move the joint. Symptoms may come and go.

Diagnosing Subacute Bursitis

To diagnose subacute bursitis, a doctor will usually ask questions about any prior medical history, any injury to the area, and any movement or activities that could have caused the condition.

The doctor may also have a physical examination and check for signs of swelling, tenderness, or deformities. Imaging tests, such as X-rays and an MRI, may also be used to look for signs of bursitis or for any underlying causes.

Treatment for Subacute Bursitis

Subacute bursitis can typically be treated at home. Initially, doctors recommend rest and protection for the area, using supports or splints. Ice can be used to reduce inflammation and pain. Anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen, may also be used.

Physical therapy, such as stretching and strengthening exercises, can help to reduce inflammation and improve range of motion. In severe cases, a corticosteroid injection may be required.

Tips for Preventing Subacute Bursitis

  • Maintain good posture when engaging in activities and exercises.
  • Warm up before any activities or exercises.
  • Avoid constant repetitive motions.
  • Take regular breaks.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Wear comfortable and supportive shoes.
  • Stretch your muscles before and after exercising.
