Postpartum endomyometritis is a serious infection of the uterus following childbirth. It can occur within the first two weeks after delivery or up to six weeks later. What Causes Postpartum Endomyometritis?

The most common symptom of postpartum endomyometritis is a high temperature. Other symptoms may include pain in the abdomen or lower back, chills, nausea, or vomiting. Some mothers may experience vaginal discharge with a foul odor. In some cases, the infection may cause an abscess in the uterus.
Complications of Postpartum Endomyometritis
If left untreated, postpartum endomyometritis can lead to serious complications. These include:
- Sepsis – a serious infection of the blood
- Blood clots, which can obstruct the flow of blood and nutrients to the uterus or cause serious infection
- Peritonitis – an infection of the lining of the abdominal cavity
- Infection of the fallopian tubes or ovaries
- Internal abscesses or pelvic inflammatory disease
- Fertility problems
Diagnosis and Treatment
Postpartum endomyometritis is usually diagnosed with a physical exam, a pelvic exam, a urine sample, and a white blood cell count. Your doctor may also order an ultrasound or other imaging test to look for any abscesses or other signs of the infection. The treatment for this condition usually involves antibiotics. Sometimes, drainage of an abscess may also be necessary. If left untreated, postpartum endomyometritis can cause serious complications, so it’s important to seek medical treatment right away if you suspect you have this condition.
