Sciatica

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a term used to describe the pain or discomfort caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest nerve in the human body, originating in the lower back and running all the way down both legs till the feet. When the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed, it can lead to a range of symptoms which can include lower back pain, pain, tingling, or numbness in the buttocks, legs, and feet, and in some cases, difficulty in controlling the legs.

Causes of Sciatica

The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated lumbar disc, though it can also be caused by:

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Spondylolisthesis, or a slipped disc
  • Degeneration of the lumbar spine
  • Injury to the spine
  • pelvic injury or fractures

Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatica symptoms can vary depending on the cause and severity of the nerve compression or irritation. Common symptoms may include:

  • A dull, throbbing, or burning pain in the lower back, buttocks, and/or legs
  • Tingling or numbness in the lower back, buttocks, and/or legs
  • Weakness in the legs
  • Difficulty in controlling the legs
  • Pain or discomfort when sitting or lying down
  • Pain that worsens with movement
  • Intense pain that makes standing or walking difficult

Diagnosis and Treatment of Sciatica

Sciatica is usually diagnosed by a physical exam. Imaging tests like MRI, CT scan, or X-ray may also be used. Treatment of sciatica usually depends on the cause and severity of symptoms. Common treatments include:

  • Physical therapy or exercise to strengthen the lower back and reduce pain and inflammation
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen for reducing inflammation and pain
  • Steroid medications or epidural injections to reduce inflammation and reduce the pressure on the sciatic nerve
  • Surgery to repair the herniated disc or other underlying cause of the sciatica

If you have any of the symptoms described above, please contact your doctor to determine the best course of action.
